VOL. III - APPENDIX A

The Descendants of Jenny Sweetnam nee  Barton

I had recorded the baptism of Jenny Barton on 3 June 1781 at Wartling, the daughter of Thomas Barton and Mary Weston who married on 5 August 1778 at Warbleton Parish Church (chapter 1).

Other researchers have recorded the baptism of Jane Barton and noted that Jane married Thomas Sweetnam on 26 December 1802 at Wartling and had a number of children before emigrating to South Africa.

According to my records Jane Barton married Thomas Sweetman on 20 December 1802 at Wartling Parish Church. Thomas signed the register (looking more like Sweetnam) whereas Jane only made her mark. She would have been 21 at the time. I had doubts about whether others were correct in assuming Jenny was Jane, but the later use of "Barton" as a middle name (see below) makes me believe that they probably were.

This appendix is essentially the story of their family, their move to South Africa, some of their children's conversion to Mormanism in South Africa and their subsequent move to the USA. Even if not related to me it is an interesting story.

Internet sources seem to confirm that Thomas Sweetnam had been born in 1774 in Warbleton, the son of Thomas Swetnam (2) (1747 - 1792) and Mary Kemp (1751 - 1822) and the baptism of Thomas Sweatman took place on 25 March 1775 at Warbleton, the son of Thomas and Mary. However records of his burial (see below) suggest that he was not born until 1783. Thomas Swetman (2) and Mary Kemp had married on 15 April 1771 in Warbleton.

Thomas Swetnam (2) was baptised on 21 May 1747 at Warbleton, the son of Thomas Swetnam (3) (1715 - ?) and Grace.  Thomas Swetnam (3) and Grace Mugridge (1727 - ?) had married on 28 April 1747 in Warbleton.

I have been told that during the Napoleanic Wars (1802-1815) Thomas Sweetnam served as a warrant officer on the HMS Orion at the Battle of Trafalgar. He fought at Copenhagen, Cape St Vincent and the Nile. It was whilst on temporary release from the Battle of Amiens that he married.

Thomas and Jane had four children in England

  • Mary Ann Sweetnam. Born 1803 in Sittingbourne, Kent
  • James Sweetnam. Born 6 August 1812 in Sittingbourne, Kent.
  • Hannah Sweetnam. Born 17 March 1815 in Sittingbourne, Kent
  • Ruth Sweetnam. Born 4 February 1817 in Sittingbourne, Kent.

They were residents of Deal in Kent when they signed up to emigrate to the Cape Colony with William Menzies party (also known as "The Dover Party of 1820" settlers) on the ship "Weymouth".

The Weymouth set sail on 7 January 1820 arriving on 15 May 1820. See British 1820 Settlers to South Africa.

They had four children on route to or in South Africa

  • Richard Weymouth Sweetnam. Born 7 April 1820 believed to be "at sea" (ADM 37/6146 - muster book for HMS Weymouth. See HMS Weymouth Log - 1820 Settlers South Africa - Correspondence (eggsa.org) )
  • Thomas Sweetnam. Born 15 August 1822 at Sweetnams Post, Kariega River, Eastern Cape, South Africa
  • Benjamin Sweetnam. Born 19 April 1826 at Sweetnams Post, Kariega River, Eastern Cape, South Africa
  • Mary Sweetnam. Born 1827 in Dist. Fort Beaufort, Cape, South. Africa.

Thomas and Jane's children would have been first cousins to James Barton who married Orpha Crowhurst. Their grandchildren were second cousins to John Henry Barton who married Caroline Wood and their great grandchildren were third cousins to James Richard Barton, my grandfather (Chapter 5).

The family were originally located on the Upper Kariegna River on the location known as "Devonshire Farm" when the party leader Menzies died in 1821 and Thomas Sweetnam took over leadership of the party.

In about 1832-1833 Thomas and his family left Karienga and settled at Port Retief. The name of their farm was "Zuiwerfontein".

Thomas Sweetnam of "Zuiwerfontein" died on 19 October 1857 at Post Retief, Fort Beaufont, South Africa and was buried at St John the Evangelist at Port Retief on 22 October 1857. The record of his burial on "FindaGrave" states that he was born on 24 December 1783 in Warbleton and was his wife was Jane Sweetnam. This would have made him 74 years old when he died although other research, suggests that he was born substantially earlier and would have been 83 years old when he died. If the later date (1783) is correct then he would have only been 19 years old when he married and so the earlier date (1774) meaning he married at 28 seems more likely. The only birth of a Thomas Sweetnam traced to 1783 took place in Hampshire!!

Jane Sweetnam died on 19 September 1869 and was buried at Post Retief, Fort Beaufont, South Africa on 21 September 1869. The record of her burial states she was born 12 April 1780 in Dover, Kent. The date looks correct, although the place is not, I am not sure about the information provided on the "FindaGrave" site as I believe this comes from other researcher rather than contemporary recordsThis photo possibly of Jane Barton was posted on Ancestry.co.uk by L W Linnell

Mary Ann Hayward nee Sweetnam

Thomas and Jenny's daughter Mary Ann Sweetnam had already married George Hayward by the time they sailed on the "Weymouth".

George and Mary Ann had eight children:

  • James John Hayward. Born 1836 in South Africa.
  • Sarah Barton Hayward. Born 21 January 1838 in Tarkastad, South Africa.

The naming of their last child seems to confirm Mary's parentage.

George Hayward died on 14 September 1863 at Stangers Rest, Rouxville. Mary Hayward died in 1884.

George and Mary Ann's son William Thomas Hayward married Dina Dorethea Fredericka Mienis on 31 July 1854 at George, Western Cape, South Africa. They had two sons:

  • William Thomas Hayward. Born 17 February 1855 at Bianco, George.

George and Mary Ann's son George Joseph Hayward is believed to have died in 1901.

George and Mary Ann's son James Hayward married Maria Elizabeth Van Eeden. James died in 1915.

George and Mary Ann's son Mary Jane Hayward is believed to have married James Phillip Lloyd on 13 June 1850 at Richmond, North Cape, South Africa. Mary Jane Lloyd died in 1910.

George and Mary Ann's son Joseph Hayward married Susara Elizabeth Bekker on 5 March 1858 at Craddock Eastern Cape, South Africa. They had four children:

George and Mary Ann's son James John Hayward is believed to have died in 1886.

Nothing more is know about George and Mary Ann's daughter Sarah Barton Hayward.

James Sweetnam and Eliza Alexandrina Smith

Thomas and Jenny's son James Sweetnam married Eliza Alexandrina Smith on 17 July 1837 at St Georges, Grahamstown, South Africa. • Sarah Alexandrine Sweetnam. Born 14 May 1860 in Winterburg
  • Amy Henrietta Adelina Sweetnam. Born 11 March 1862 in Fort Beaufort, Winterburg

Again the naming of one of their children supports James's parentage.

J Sweetnam, Commanding "Winterberg Grey Volunteers" certified that the following officers, non-commissioned officers and men were entitled to a medal for military operations fighting the Gaikan, Goalekai and Kafir tribes between 1877 and 1878. James Sweetnam would have been 65 at the time, was he certifying for at least some of his sons for the list includes

  • 2nd Lieutenant Joseph Sweetnam
  • Sergeant Major Alfred Sweetnam
  • Trooper Alfred Sweetnam

Other researchers suggest that James and Eliza's son Thomas Henry Sweetnam married Arkie Susannah Scooby, but when Thomas Henry Sweetnam, farmer of Summer Pride died on 8 August 1905 aged 65 years, the death notice shows that he is unmarried and without children. Ruth Talbot nee Sweetnam.

Thomas and Jenny's daughter Ruth Sweetnam married Henry Talbot on 20 March 1833 at St George's Church, Grahamstown, Albany, South Africa.

Henry Talbot had been born on 16 October 1812 in Pimlico, London. He was the son of John Talbot and Priscilla Purcell. He and his parents had emigrated to South Africa on the "Aurora" as part of the Sephten's party, sailing from London on 6 February 1820 arriving on 15 May 1820.

Henry and Ruth are believed to have had sixteen children:

  • Henry James Talbot. Born 17 February 1834 at Grahamstown, Albany, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
  • John Josiah Talbot. Born 23 August 1835 at Grahamstown, Albany, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
  • Thomas Benjamin Talbot. Born 25 March 1838 at Grahamstown, Albany, Eastern Cape.
  • Charles Stewart Talbot. Born 5 August 1840 at Grahamstown, Albany, South Africa.

  • Hyram Purcell Talbot. Born 5 May 1859 in Queenstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
  • Ruth Sweetnam Talbot. Born 17 February 1862 at Kaysville, Davis County, Utah.

On 20 February 1861 the family sailed from South Africa arriving at Boston Harbour on 12 April 1861. The family settled in Kaysville, Utah on 13 September 1861. It is understood that Henry had converted to Mormonism, being baptised into the faith on 28 December 1857 whilst in South Africa, with his wife and children converting six months later and they travelled to the USA with other converts to "gather with the saints in Zion".

The 1870 census shows Henry as a "Farm master" with real estate valued at 1,700 and personal effects valued at 200. The census records that they had 16 children in the house (no 177). Ruth is described as "keeping house", Albert, aged 21, Richard, aged 19, Walter, aged 18 and Edward, aged 15 are farm hands. Stephen and Hyram are also listed. "Susan", aged 17 is described as "at home" and Sarah (although looks more like "Anna"), aged 24 is "Keeping house". Eliza, aged 14 and Ruth, aged 7 are also listed. The next address "House 178" is occupied by Agnes Talbot, aged 56, also "keeping house" and her daughter, Agnes, aged 28. It appears that Agnes Talbot may also have been Henry Talbot's wife!! Other researchers suggest that Henry had married Agnes Goddard on 8 June 1867 at Salt Lake City!!

In 1880 Henry Talbot, aged 63, is listed at "Dwelling number 147" with his wife Agnes, aged 37 and four children. It is believed that Henry and Agnes had seven children meaning Henry fathered twenty three children in all!! Ruth Talbot, aged 60, is listed at "Dwelling number 148" with Edward, aged 29, labourer, Eliza, aged 23, "keeping house", Hannah, aged 37 and Hyrum, aged 21, farming.

Agnes Talbot nee Goddard is pictured below;

Henry Talbot died on 15 December 1895 and was buried on 18 December 1895 at Utah.

In 1900 Ruth Talbot, 83 year old widow was living at House 10, Leyton Precinct, Davis Utah. The census confirms she had sixteen children of which thirteen survived. Agnes Talbot, aged 57 years, and five of her children were living at House 11. The census shows that she had seven children of which six survived.

Ruth Talbot died on 22 May 1903 at Kaysville, Davis, Utah. Her obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune,

In 1910 Henry's other widow Agnes was living with her son and family in Layton, Davis. In 1913, Agnes is listed at 3235 Wash Avenue, Ogden, Utah. Agnes died on 12 January 1917 in Layton, Davis County, Utah.

Polygamy was practiced by leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) for more than half of the 19th century, and practiced publicly from 1852 to 1890 by between 20 and 30% of Latter-day Saint families.

Henry and Ruth's son Henry James Talbot married Lavinia Ann Wall, daughter of Ruth's sister Hannah (see above). Henry and Lavinia are also listed as passengers on the Race Horse, along with their 5 year old son Robert (see above).

According to the 1900 census Henry and Ruth's son John Josiah Talbot arrived in the USA from South Africa in 1859, this was two years before his parents Henry and Ruth arrived with the remainder of the family and he would have been about 24 years old at the time. John married Hannah Gubby in approx 1866. Hannah had been born in England and had emigrated to the USA in 1866. In 1880 they were living in Ferron Precinct, Emery, Utah where 45 year old John was a boiler maker. In 1900 they were living at Leamington Precinct, Millard County, Utah where 64 year old John was a farmer. Hannah Gubby Talbot died on 6 June 1907 and was buried in Leamington Cemetary Her death certificate indicates that she had been ill for a number of years after a fall had left her helpless. John appears to have remarried. John died on 25 February 1908 and was buried in Leamington cemetery. The record notes his parents were Henry and Ruth Talbot and his wife was Jane Broke Talbot. In 1920 Jane was living with her brother Archie M Hunter in Coyote, Utah. Jane Broke Hunter Talbot died on 22 March 1923 at Antimony, Garfield County, Utah.

Henry and Ruth's son Thomas Benjamin Talbot was 22 when he emigrated to the USA on the same ship as his parents in 1861. The same year he married Margaret Alice Wiggill on 13 June 1861 at Florence, Douglas, Nebraska.
